IDEA (Information Development ~ Expanding Awareness) evolved from the North Central Region Educational Materials Project.

In 1998, IDEA was established by Dr. Sorrel Brown to provide a way to develop, produce and effectively market educational products or programs nationally in a broad range of disciplines.

Dr. Brown saw the need to assist coalitions formed by researchers, extension and other educators in developing educational publications and outcome or impact reports. The need for a liaison between partners to assist in coordination efforts was also identified. The North Central Region Cooperative Extension Service and Iowa State University Extension sponsored Dr. Brown’s pilot project.
