Project Detail

Dull Knife Memorial College brochureThe Dull Knife brochure is an example of working with a client's limited budget and unique audience to produce a publication designed for multiple audiences.

Client

Chief Dull Knife College, a 1994 land-grant institution
Northern Cheyenne Nation
Lame Deer, Montana

Project Goal

Develop a promotional brochure to highlight the unique environment, opportunities and education available at Dull Knife Memorial College. The primary audience is the potential Native American student, including adult students. Secondary audiences are those in government and legislative positions who support USDA programs and other funding used by the land-grant college. The client wants to also inform the public, who often has little knowledge about 1994 land-grant institutions.

Limited budget required tight planning and economy of materials and time.

IDEA Solution

Show a blend of both the traditional and contemporary Native American influence: One of the school's strengths is "building the new by using the foundation of the old." IDEA developed this concept through design, color and photographs, being careful to avoid using common Native American stereotypes.

IDEA designed a 3-panel format with an inside pocket for inserts of program and course information. This allows for maximum use of the general brochure by many different departments in the college, each with their own programs. The back panel is designed with slits for inserting a business card. This offers additional flexibility by providing a way to attach more specific contact information.

Result

The Client says, "They're a hit! Comments were very positive! We even had positive feedback from our Accreditation Review Panel on the brochures!"
